After the install is completed, click the play icon next to 'Age of Empires 2 HD' in the left sidebar. If asked to choose an application, select 'Porting Kit' and 'Always use this application'. Then click Advanced, Tools, Winetricks, find DirectPlay in the list(s) and hit 'run'.
This is preferably done through the Wineskin wrapper's advanced options, reachable by holding Cmd when starting the wrapper. Get Wineskin, create a new Wineskin wrapper application, and install AoE 2.
